A crane that has been an eyesore in the City of Toronto for years has fell onto a condo located at 8 The Esplanade, which caused “significant damage” but there were no injuries.
This specific building is attached to Meridian Hall performing arts centre.
Toronto Fire Services was called about the collapse at 2 p.m., while the Toronto Police Service was called shortly after 2 p.m.
“Our crews got up on the roof of the building. We found a small, service crane,” Platoon Chief Kevin Shaw, of Toronto Fire Services, said in a statement. “The crane collapsed, causing some structural damage on the roof, but no danger to any of the floors below. It didn’t get into any of the apartment units. There were no injuries. People responsible for the crane are getting equipment and staff to secure the crane so they can dismantle it.”
Toronto Fire crews will be assessing the structural integrity of the building and the Ministry of Labour will be investigating the situation.
