Even abandoned homes cost $1 million in Greater Toronto Area

Even vacant homes cost a ton of money in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).

This entirely abandoned home at 124 Steeles Avenue East in Markham has been vacant since 2012 without hydro, heat or water.

In fact, you could make the argument that the home actually looks quite haunted. The listing says that the house is being sold “as is, where is,” so you know it’s special. The two-storey detached home features 2 bedrooms and a full basement.

Overall, the house is in rough shape. For example, there are cracks in the exterior walls and the foundation, which are telltale signs that it will take a significant investment to get the house in a livable state. Water has also made its way through the roof causing water damage and mould in various areas around the home.

What makes the situation even worse is there’s a leaky oil tank in the basement that seems to have damaged the floor considerably. Showings are only available during the daytime and the listing agent suggests those interested “bring a flashlight.”

Amusingly, the house — which is listed for an astounding $961,000- – requires unconditional offers, according to its seller. If you’re interested in a home like this, you’re after the land and not the actual house, so in a sense, the state of it really doesn’t matter that much.

That said, the thought of purchasing a house that costs this much that you really couldn’t live in without a ton of work, remains a painful proposition.
